Why Should I Run the Asaba International Road Race?
The first ever Asaba International Road Race is a dual athletic fitness event comprising of a 10KM road race and 5KM fitness walk. It is slated to take place in Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria, on the 4th of, 2025. This maiden run is open to indigenous runners, recreational runners (run for fun and fitness) amateur and elite athletes.

This 10km road race, along with a 5km fitness walk, is designed to test your endurance, showcase your talent, and unite athletes from all walks of life. We aim to position Asaba on the global map, showcasing our city as a rapidly growing metropolis in Nigeria and Africa. The race will traverse a scenic route, allowing you to appreciate the infrastructural transformation and warm hospitality of our people.
We anticipate welcoming over 40,000 athletes to Asaba, creating a platform for networking, cultural exchange, and economic stimulation within our community. Cash prizes will be awarded to winners in various categories, including local, national, and international athletes. Registration is free, and we encourage everyone, from seasoned marathon runners to recreational enthusiasts, to join us.

Training for Your First Long Distance Race?
Here are some key things to note before starting a training program:
- Set a realistic timeline to train (typically 16–20 weeks for beginners).
- Get proper running shoes suited to your foot type.
- Make a commitment to consistency: Progress comes with regular training.
Ready. Set. Go!
Train to win with these 4 steps:
1. Have A Weekly Workout Plan: A well-balanced training schedule includes:
a. Long Runs (once a week) to build endurance.
b. Speed Work (intervals or tempo runs) to improve pace.
c. Easy Runs (shorter, relaxed runs) for recovery.
d. Cross-Training (cycling, swimming, or strength training) to prevent injuries.
e. Rest Days (at least one per week) for muscle recovery.
2. Nutrition & Hydration: Proper nutrition is CRUCIAL for optimal performance and recovery. Include the essential nutrients in these food groups:
a. Carbohydrates (whole grains, fruits, vegetables) for sustained energy.
b. Proteins (lean meats, eggs, legumes) to aid muscle repair.
c. Healthy Fats (nuts, seeds, avocados) to boost your body’s energy stores for endurance.
d. Hydration - Drink water consistently to replenish your body’s electrolytes after long runs.
3. Injury Prevention and Recovery: Avoid setbacks with these key tips:
a. Start with short runs and gradually increase the distance.
b. Ensure proper warm-ups before a run & cool-downs after a run.
c. Strength training: Include core and leg exercises to improve stability.
d. Listen to your body: Rest if you feel pain or excessive fatigue.
4. Race Day Preparation:
a. Taper your training: Reduce your race mileage 2–3 weeks before the run.
b. Eat light on the race day: Focus on healthy carbs for energy e.g. bananas, etc.
c. Stick to familiar foods: Avoid experimenting with new meals.
d. Plan for hydration: Carry a water bottle or note the water stops along the route, to get water.
e. Wear a waist pouch: For our essentials (phone, keys, etc).
